CANADIAN FOOD LABELLING – SPECIAL EDITION


This is a special two day workshop on Canadian food labelling, focusing on labelling modernization. The program is suitable for all levels of experience, as it covers in detail the labelling features noted in the outline below. Emphasis, however, is on Canada’s broad new food labelling modernization plans. These include the already finalized new ingredient and nutrition labelling rules under the FDR, (Food and Drug Regulations), but also the new Front of Packaging, (FOP), nutrition symbols requirements which are likely to be finalized in fall of 2019. We are not finished yet! We will also look at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA), new proposed food labelling rules modernizing the FDR and the Safe Food for Canadian Regulations (SFCR). This includes changes to the following…

  • how the common name must be formatted and presented on a label
  • how the dealer name and address on consumer prepackaged food must be declared
  • new unified country of origin labeling rules
  • revised best before date and expiration date labelling
  • new rules on highlighting flavours in foods
  • new rules on quantitative declarations related to emphasized ingredients
  • more ingredient labelling changes on collective name
  • streamlining commodity specific labelling rules
  • enhanced legibility requirements, X and H heights of letters, what does this all mean
  • new rules on test markets
  • changes to standard container size rules

We can likely expect final regulations on CFIA’s newest proposed rules by mid 2020. Will you be ready? This workshop aims to assist with the transition to better understanding the many changes. We will aim to also provide an overview of the complex implementation periods, now proposed to stretch between immediately once rules are finalized through to 2022 and 2026. The workshop covers all basic Canadian food labelling requirements, (common name, net content, ingredients, allergens, nutrition labelling, dealer name and address, country of origin, date labelling, storage labelling, highlighting of ingredients and flavours, FOP, etc.). We will approach the labelling features from the perspective of comparing current and future labels. This is a new workshop, with new workshop exercises.

By the end of the workshop, attendees will not only be more familiar with Canadian food labelling requirements under the FDR and SFCR. Attendees will also better understand and be prepared to manage the transition to the many new and revised Canadian food labelling features.

Spain is undoubtedly the largest market for fish and seafood within the EU.
